This process is for students in the final semester of a master’s degree that have applied or has intent to pursue a 2nd master’s degree.
STEPS TO APPLY
- Reach out to the records and registration and submit a second master’s form - Request a Second Master's: Harrisburg University Records & Registration
- The form must be submitted during the final semester of your current degree. (up to two weeks prior to the start of the new program)
- Wait for the approval letter from Records and Registration. Any questions or concerns should be submitted to Records and Registration at their portal - reghelp.harrisburgu.edu
- You must be Registered for classes (registration is generally only open one month prior to the start date)
- Request for an updated I-20 in Terra Dotta using the 2nd degree request and you will need to attach evidence of financial support.
- Request for CPT (if you have a job) – with the new AWP form and employment verification letter.
Note the following.
For an Updated I-20
- Updated I-20 can only be issued once the current degree has been conferred
- Register for classes prior to submitting the 2nd degree request and CPT request.
- Evidence of financial support is required for the 2nd degree request - Evidence of Financial Support : International Student Office (harrisburgu.edu)
NOTE: I-20’s can only be processed once your degree has been conferred – this is generally within the week prior to the start of the new program.
Curriculum Practical Training (CPT)
- There will be a gap in employment from the last day of the current program till the first day of the new program. Employment is not allowed without approval on the updated CPT I-20.
- CPT does not transfer from one program to another - New updated CPT approval on an updated I-20 for the new program is required.
- Updated Academic work placement form (AWP) for the new program with an updated employer verification (EV) letter from the employer for the new program is required.
- CPT must be requested prior to the start date and can only be approved from the start of the new program.
- Request for CPT should be submitted at least one or two weeks prior to the start of the new program to give time for processing.
- CPT start date can only be from the new program start date.
- Processing times for CPT is generally 3 to 5 days but it can only be processed with the updated I-20 once the student has registered for classes and the degree has been conferred.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Will I still be in F1 active status between my two programs?
Yes. During the time in-between degree programs, there is a 60-day grace period, which means students will still be in F-1 status. You are not permitted to work during that time, but you will remain in valid F1 status.
Does CPT automatically carry over from my previous program? No- you will need to apply for CPT for your new program.

When I submit the "2nd degree" request, will I receive my I-20? No, you will only receive your I-20 once your new program has begun. The request indicates to the International Office that you are applying for a new program. The ISO still needs to make sure that every student has registered, paid their tuition, and graduated before issuing the I-20.
Do I need to submit an Affidavit of Support? Only if you are using a sponsor's bank statement. If you are sponsoring yourself, you do not need to upload it.
